A Letter from Helen Meyers, Chair of Women in Philanthropy
Dear Member Investors,
Recently I saw an advertisement in a magazine where a woman was choosing between purchasing a pair of shoes or a program to help her learn a new language. How fortunate for her, and for many of us, that this is the type of decision she is choosing to make on how to use her precious resources.
Unfortunately, too many women have to choose between paying their rent or buying medicine, or feeding their children or paying the utility bill.
This is why an organization such as Women in Philanthropy (WIP) is so important. It would be very difficult for us as individuals to tackle the issues of poverty, homelessness, or the high unemployment rate. But collectively, we can make a powerful difference.
Consider that in 2011 WIP Member Investors awarded $100,000 to nonprofit organizations in the Midlands that address education, health and financial stability. The St. Lawrence Place Children’s Program, The Salvation Army, the Mental Illness Recovery Center, and the Free Medical Clinic all provide critical services for women and children. You can read about these grantees’ programs throughout our website.
As the incoming chair of Women in Philanthropy (WIP) I look forward to working with you to address community issues through leadership, fundraising, advocacy and mentoring. We welcome and encourage your participation on one of our committees, attendance at a networking event or educational program, or just through your financial investment.
Buy new shoes. Learn a new language. Help a mother get the medicine she needs for her baby. Thank you for investing in our community.
Warm regards,
Helen Meyers, Chair
